How do heat pumps work?

Heat pumps are an alternative solution for heating residential buildings, much more environmentally friendly than traditional coal furnaces. Depending on where the energy used to heat the building comes from, ground heat pumps , air-air and air-water heat pumps are used. The general mechanism of operation is quite similar, the heat pump draws energy from the environment into the building. This energy is then used to heat the building and additionally makes hot water available.

Regardless of where the energy is taken from (air, ground or water), it is transferred to the heat pump, where it is processed in the process of compression and expansion, which results in heating the residential building.

How much does a heat pump cost?

When looking for appropriate renewable energy heating methods, it is worth considering all possibilities, guided by the knowledge of specialists. Prices for entire installations vary, depending on the technology used and the size of the building that will be heated. Surface area is one of the most important factors that should be taken into account when choosing a specific heat pump variant.

The cost of a heat pump along with all the accessories necessary for installation is quite an expense. Experts estimate that for a small house it will cost up to PLN 20-30,000, and for a house with an area of approximately 150 m2, the average expense is approximately PLN 40,000.

How much electricity does a heat pump consume?

Electricity consumption in heat pumps is quite diverse. When looking for information, please note that the efficiency coefficient COP. It determines how much consumed electricity and thermal energy is delivered at a given moment. This is an important parameter that allows you to compare different product variants to choose the optimal one for your needs.

To initially assess the operating costs and electricity expenses that the heat pump will generate, you need to check the average annual efficiency coefficient SCOP. It can be calculated using dedicated calculators. The SCOP coefficient allows you to determine the amount of thermal energy that will be supplied to heat the house in relation to the amount of electricity consumed by the heat pump during the year.

To know the approximate expenditure on electricity, divide the estimated value of the building's heat demand by the value of the SCOP coefficient. Then, the obtained result must be multiplied by the price of a kW unit, which shows the level of expenses for heating the building with a heat pump.

Average calculations indicate that approximately 2000-3000 kWh will be used to heat an area of approximately 100 m2, but these are approximate values because the exact expenditure depends, among others, on: on the temperature maintained in the building or the building's energy standards.

Recommended heat pumps

When looking for a suitable heat pump model, you should approach the topic individually, taking into account the parameters of a specific project, including the energy standards of the building and its area. The best solution is the help of specialists who will help you choose the most effective solution.

One of the recommended solutions is the R32 three-phase 14 kWh monoblock air pump from LG. A big advantage here is the energy class A+++. In addition to ensuring effective heating of the building, you can also easily ensure constant access to hot water. The device is characterized by high efficiency and reliability.

Another noteworthy solution is the De Dietrich pump - the Alezio AWHP 11 MR single-phase air pump , which is an air-water pump. The solution allows not only heating an apartment or house, but also cooling and even using air conditioning. Single-phase models are less efficient than three-phase models, so in buildings that require higher heating efficiency, three-phase solutions should be used.
