I don't think on the evidence of George Russell's race [in Montreal] you can justifiably argue that Mercedes was the fastest car on track in Canada. But what you can say it's the first race this year that it's been pretty much close to being fully competitive. And Russell saw that, but he went over the edge, and he's admitted it.

So what Sergio Perez is talking about there, he is not actually talking about the physical throttle pedal, the one that's under his foot, he's talking about the response that he gets from the engine when he presses that pedal; so how does the power delivery come in when he activates the throttle, and that's something that is completely controllable by the engineers.

  6. Team radio - Perez to Red Bullpublished at 12:51 21 June

Perez: "Is there anything wrong with the front pedal? We are understeering too much."

Engineer: "We'll have a talk in the garage."

Sergio Perez has been on the team radio to ask about the front pedal. The Mexican driver has been complaining about his Red Bull understeering.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc has told his team that his car is "horrendous for now".

Perez is currently sixth and Leclerc is seventh.

  8. Everyone waiting on Sainz to movepublished at 12:48 21 June

There was an amusing point in the drivers' press conferences yesterday when Tom Clarkson asked what is the cork in the bottle when it comes to contracts for next season and beyond, which Kevin Magnussen just pointed and said 'well, he is', pointing at Carlos Sainz.

Because Sainz's future is going to dictate the future of a lot of other drivers further down the field - not to mention Kevin Magnussen, Valtteri Bottas, where does he go? Esteban Ocon is on the market and in the hunt for a ride.

There are so many other pieces of the puzzle that will fall into place. We need Sainz to move first.

I don't mind a street track on the circuit; I don't mind Las Vegas and Miami, I actually don't mind Monaco, but as long as we have a good mix across the season.

One of things that the last few rounds has really highlighted is we have such a variety in terms of circuits that we're much more likely to get a mix of results.

Mercedes' George Russell is at the top of the timesheet, Max Verstappen is just three-tenths behind the Brit.

Carlos Sainz Sr is in the Ferrari garage keeping a close eye on his son.

Where the Spaniard will go next season, is the question everyone has been asking.

  12. 'We could find out where everyone sits'published at 12:37 21 June

    12:37 21 June

    Marc Priestley
Former F1 mechanic on BBC Radio 5 Live

Is [the circuit] good for racing? Traditionally, not really, if we'e honest about this. It is a great track for lots of things, and one of the things I'm most looking forward to this weekend is finding out where everybody really sits, because for that it's great.

It's got a reasonable variation of corners, it's a traditional-type track, as opposed to the street track. With all the improvements we've seen from the likes of McLaren, Ferrari, up against that dominant Red Bull the start of the year, this could be the moment we really find out exactly where everyone sits.

The rest are on the hard compound.

Oliver Bearman will hop into a Haas seat for first practice in Barcelona.

This will be the 19-year-old's second FP1 appearance of his allocated six for the American team.

"My personal goal is of course just to keep improving myself, keep working on what I’ve identified as weak points when I drive in F1," he told the Formula 1 website.

Bearman took over from Carlos Sainz at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, where he finished seventh.

“These last few months since Saudi have been pretty crazy. I’ve been very busy with F1 testing and done some FP [running] as well. It’s been pretty full [on], but I love it. I’ve been really enjoying it and it’s been really good."

Lando Norris says the hopes of catching Max Verstappen in the World Championship this year have grown in recent races.

The McLaren driver took his maiden Formula 1 victory in Miami last month and is third in drivers' championship, 63 points behind the Dutchman and seven behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Norris acknowledged that beating Verstappen, who has won six of the nine races so far this year, would be “tough” because the Red Bull driver “doesn’t have a weakness”.

But he added: “There is more chance and possibilities now, especially if Mercedes are in the fight; more chance of having a bigger swing of points."
