The seventh-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team advanced to the final day of the 2024 NCAA Division III Softball Championship Regional Round after splitting a pair of games on the second day of competition at Mather Park in Cleveland on Friday. CWRU fell to 25th-ranked Calvin University 7-1 in the opening game before coming back to defeat 23rd-ranked Dominican University 8-7 in the later contest.
The Spartans moved to 36-7 on the season, and the Knights improved to 34-10. The Stars, who defeated Penn State Behrend 1-0 to face CWRU, ended their season with a record of 39-7. The Lions concluded their season at 33-10.
Case Western Reserve will face Calvin for the regional championship on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Spartans need two wins to advance to their third-ever Super Regional Round, while Calvin just needs to win one time to continue its season. If the host school wins the first game, there will be a decisive, winner-take-all seventh game scheduled to begin 30 minutes later.
Game 5: #7 CWRU 8, #23 Dominican 7
The Spartans fell to the losers' bracket with a loss in the opening game of the day. Playing as the road team in the elimination game, Case Western Reserve scored six runs before the Stars came to bat.
First-yearKaren Pottsled off the game with a home run, her second of the tournament and her seventh of the season. With two runners in scoring position, a pair of runs scored on a Dominican error. SeniorKela Jagodadrove in a run with an infield single, and the sixth score of the inning came across on a wild pitch.
After no team scored for the next two frames, the Stars plated seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a one-run lead.
Following a scoreless fifth inning, juniorKatelyn Lammled off the sixth inning with a double, putting the tying run in scoring position with no outs. After a groundout and a lineout, Potts delivered a go-ahead two-out two-run home run to put the Spartans ahead 8-7. It was her third home run of the tournament and her eighth of the season, tying her for the team lead.
Dominican put the tying run on base in the next two innings, but the Stars were unable to score. Facing elimination in the bottom of the seventh inning, Geneva Pollman drew a leadoff walk. After a popped-up bunt, Gillian Czubernat singled to center field to put the winning run on base and the go-ahead run into scoring position with one out. Junior pitcherLexi Miskeystruck out the next two batters to seal the victory, reaching the 200-strikeout milestone for the second time in her career.
Miskey (22-4) recorded all 21 outs for the Spartans, allowing no runs on two hits and six walks. Her 22 wins are the second-most in a single season in program history, and she struck out seven batters to increase her tournament total to 22.
Potts had her sixth three-hit game of the season, driving in three runs and scoring twice. SeniorKaiLi Grossrecorded two hits, a stolen base, and a run scored, and Jagoda, juniorIsabella Russo, and first-yearNylah Durhamall drove in runs.
Game 3: #25 Calvin 7, #7 CWRU 1
Following three scoreless innings, the Knights broke the deadlock with a two-out three-run double in the top of the fourth inning.
Calvin added four runs in the sixth inning to extend its lead to seven, effectively putting the game away and securing its place in the regional final.
CWRU scored on a two-out single by Potts in the seventh inning to avoid the shutout.
The Spartans were unable to solve Calvin pitcher Brooke Hunderman (16-5), who allowed just one run on five hits while striking out four.
